The best thing about the lower Lake Garda is not just the lake outside your window. It is that within less than two hours you can reach a waterfall inside a cave, an emerald mountain lake, a rocky headland above the gulf and a beach of stone slabs with crystal-clear water. Four completely different landscapes, all reachable while keeping your suitcase in one place.

This guide brings together the four water trips we recommend most often to our guests, with verified practical details: how you actually get there from Desenzano, what it costs, when to go and what to know before you leave, including the things nobody usually tells you.

Why it pays to stay in Desenzano

There is a geographical reason why Desenzano del Garda works as a base camp, and it is the same reason it has always been the arrival point for anyone coming from outside: it is the junction where all the routes around the lake meet.

That last point makes the difference, and you only grasp it looking at a map. Anyone staying on the Brescia shore who wants to reach Malcesine or Torri del Benaco has to drive around the lake or take the car ferry. Anyone staying on the Verona shore who wants to see Salo or Isola del Garda has the same problem in reverse. From Desenzano, sitting at the foot of the lake where the two roads divide, you simply choose each morning which side to explore.

Then there is the harbour. Three of the four trips in this guide can be done leaving the car parked: you step on the ferry and off where you need to be, with no parking to find, no queues and no restricted traffic zones.

1. The Varone Waterfall, a waterfall inside the mountain

This is not a waterfall you look at from a distance. The Magnone stream has carved a gorge into the rock and you walk right inside it, on walkways, with the water crashing down a few metres away and the noise drowning out conversation. The temperature drops sharply and you come out with damp hair: it is the perfect trip for a very hot day.

How to get there from Desenzano

From Desenzano harbour take the ferry bound for Riva del Garda, the northern terminus of the line. The crossing takes about two hours with the fast service and runs the length of the lake: the journey alone is worth the day, with the mountains closing in as you head north. From Riva the waterfall is 3 kilometres away, reachable by taxi or local bus. Alternatively you can drive, allowing around two hours.

Cost and opening hours

A full ticket costs 7 euros, family packages run from 19 to 28 euros depending on the group. From May to August the park opens 9am to 7pm, in September 9am to 6pm, in October 9am to 5pm. There is a car park served by a free shuttle every 15 minutes from 10am to 5pm.

What to know before you go

This matters more than anything else, and it comes from the park itself: between 10 July and 31 August a visit is not recommended, because waiting times reach three hours. That is not our impression, it is stated on their official website. If you are at the lake in high August, save this trip for another time. If you can choose, September is the month: same spectacle, open until 6pm, no queue.

2. Lake Tenno, the turquoise you would not expect

A short way from Lake Garda, but already in the mountains, lies a small lake of a colour that looks wrong: a tropical turquoise, ringed by meadows and woods. This is Lake Tenno, and in 2026 it was awarded the Blue Flag, the international mark for water quality. You can swim, hire a pedalo or a SUP board, or simply lie on the grass.

How to get there from Desenzano

This is the only one of the four that needs a car. You can drive up the western Gardesana, the scenic road hugging the shore through Salo, Gardone and Limone, or take the A22 Brenner motorway, faster and far less scenic. Our advice: go up on the Gardesana and come back on the motorway, so you see the lake in the morning light and return without tiring yourself out. Open in Google Maps.

What to know before you go

Two practical things that make a difference. First: from the car park down to the lake there are 120 steps, which means climbing them again at the end of the day. With prams, or with anyone who struggles to walk, factor that in. Second: car parks P1 and P2 are paid, around 1.50 euros an hour; the few free spaces near P2 are only there if you arrive early.

3. Rocca di Manerba, the gulf from above (and free)

It is the closest trip and, for the ratio between effort and reward, perhaps the best. The Rocca is a spur of rock dropping sheer into the lake, with the remains of a medieval fortification on top and, below, a nature reserve with small coves. From the summit you see the whole gulf, Isola del Garda and, on clear days, Monte Baldo on the far shore.

How to get there from Desenzano

It is 13 kilometres, about a quarter of an hour by car along the Brescia shore. Ideal for an afternoon, or for late afternoon if you want the sunset from up there. Open in Google Maps.

What it costs

Nothing: entry to the museum, the archaeological park and the nature reserve is free. The Valtenesi civic archaeological museum is in Piazza Garibaldi in Manerba del Garda; for current opening times it is best to call +39 339 6137247, as they change with the season.

What to know before you go

Closed shoes: the path up to the Rocca is unpaved and steep in places. In exchange, it is a short climb that children can manage too.

4. Jamaica Beach, seven minutes by ferry

At the very end of the Sirmione peninsula, just beyond the Grotte di Catullo, the lake has no sand but large flat stone slabs sloping gently into the water. The bottom is pale and the water clear: it is the most photographed spot on the lower lake, and rightly so.

How to get there from Desenzano

This is the easiest trip of all. From Desenzano harbour the ferry reaches Sirmione in 5 to 7 minutes with the fast service (about twenty with the ordinary boat). You step ashore and walk through the old town, passing beneath the Scaliger castle, to the tip of the peninsula. No parking to hunt for, no traffic: in summer getting to Sirmione by car is a trial, by ferry you step off practically in the square.

Summer departures from Desenzano run throughout the day. It is worth being at the ticket office about twenty minutes early, and remember the fast service carries a small supplement. Open in Google Maps.

What to know before you go

This tip is worth the trip: bring water shoes. The slabs are smooth and beautiful, but slippery when wet, and there are sharp spots below the surface. Every summer someone goes barefoot and regrets it. There is no sand, so no sandcastles for toddlers, but for swimmers it is one of the finest spots on the lake.

The right time to do all four

If we had to pick one period, it would be September. The lake is still warm enough to swim at Jamaica Beach, the Varone Waterfall becomes visitable without queues, Lake Tenno loses the August crowds and Rocca di Manerba is at its best in the low evening light. The days are still long and the ferries run on the summer timetable until early October.

It is also when the lake goes back to belonging to the people who live here: there is space in the restaurants, the roads flow and the places that take hours of queueing in August can be visited at your own pace.
