When the lights come on along the lakefront and the scent of mulled wine mingles with the cold air rising from the water, Lake Garda becomes one of Italy’s most beautiful Christmas stages. From mid-November until Epiphany, dozens of towns along the three shores—Veneto, Lombardy, and Trentino—open their Christmas markets, and just minutes away by train, nearby Verona dresses its historic center with Nuremberg-style chalets.
The problem, for those who truly want to see them all, is just one: there are many and they are far apart. Bardolino is on the opposite shore from Salò, Riva del Garda is at the far end of the lake, Verona is inland. Moving from one market to another changing hotels every night is tiring and, in winter, risky: many Lake Garda villages close restaurants and shops as soon as the weekend ends. The solution is known to the most experienced travelers: choose a single base, and choose it well.
Why it’s convenient to stay in Desenzano to visit the Christmas markets
Desenzano del Garda is not a town that shuts down in winter. With its approximately 30,000 inhabitants, it is the liveliest center of the lower Garda: restaurants open every evening, shops, pharmacies, and services that operate even in December, when smaller villages lower their shutters until the following weekend. But the real advantage is its location: it is the point where all the lake’s routes meet.

Verona’s Christmas markets, 20 minutes by train
Verona is the pinnacle of the area’s Christmas. The historic twinning with Nuremberg brings to Piazza Bra about sixty wooden chalets in pure Central European style, set between the Arena and the palaces of the center. Above the Roman amphitheater shines the famous Comet Star, and the city fills with nativity scenes with the great International Nativity Scene Exhibition. In the 2025 edition the Christmas markets were open from November 21 to December 28; for 2026 they are expected in a similar period, which we will update here as soon as confirmed by the Municipality.
The smartest way to visit them is precisely from Desenzano: train to Porta Nuova, a short walk or the shuttle to Piazza Bra, and on the return—when Verona’s ring roads are one continuous traffic jam—you come back relaxed by train. Christmas markets on the Veneto shore: Bardolino, Lazise and Garda
The eastern shore is the richest in Christmas markets overlooking the water, all reachable from Desenzano in about half an hour by car via Peschiera.
- Bardolino is the most scenic: over forty chalets on the lakefront, a Ferris wheel, the ice skating rink and a Christmas train. In 2025 it opened from November 22 to January 6.
- Lazise, a walled town, winds its Christmas market between Piazza Vittorio Emanuele and the lakefront, with the illuminated Scaliger walls as a backdrop.
- Garda focuses on taste with “Christmas among the Olive Trees” and its heated Pavilion of Flavors.
- Not far away, Peschiera del Garda adds a gem: the underwater nativity scene submerged in the canal.
Christmas markets on the Lombardy shore: Desenzano, Sirmione, Salò
The western shore plays the elegance card, and it’s our home shore.
- Desenzano illuminates the Porto Vecchio and the lakefront, sets up an artisan market in the squares and places in the water the famous floating nativity scene, one of the lake’s most photographed spectacles.
- Sirmione: the Scaliger castle at the entrance to the village illuminated festively and the ice skating rink in Piazza Mercato.
- Salò with its “Enchanted Christmas” on the long lakeside promenade and a vintage carousel.

Christmas markets in Garda Trentino: Riva, Arco and the villages
Going north the landscape becomes Alpine and the atmosphere more Nordic. From Desenzano you reach Riva in just over an hour along the Gardesana.
- Riva del Garda: the gastronomic village “Di Gusto in Gusto” and Santa’s House inside the Rocca on the water, by reservation.
- Arco: the Christmas market around the collegiate church, with spectacular video mapping projections on historic buildings at dusk.
